On March 1, 1868 at the University of Virginia, six young men united in friendship gathered together “for the promotion of brotherly love and kind feeling; for the mutual benefit and advancement of the interests of those with whom we sympathize and deem worthy of our regard; We have resolved to form a fraternity, believing that, thus we can most successfully accomplish our object.” Their resolve was strong indeed, for they not just accomplished, but excelled, at creating a brotherhood of distinction known to us today as Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike).
Clearly the values of the founders have proved appealing, as Pike boasts some impressive numbers with over 250,000 lifetime initiates, 14,000 undergraduate members, and more than 220 chapters and colonies across the United States and Canada. All Pikes hold themselves to a high standard of conduct and achievement, so it is easy to see why so many have truly excelled and left their mark on the world, such as Rodger O. Riney (Founder, President, & CEO of Scottrade), Karl C. Rove (Chief of Staff, Bush Administration), Tim McGraw (Country Music Artist), Kyle Orton (NFL Quarterback, Chicago Bears), and John Stewart (Host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with John Stewart”). With Brothers like these, it is easy to see why so many men want to wear the Pi Kappa Alpha garnet and old gold!
As a fraternity, Pike has upheld the desire of the founders to develop men of integrity, intellect, success, and high moral character through Pike University, North America’s premier fraternal leadership program. With twelve annual events and over 3,000 participants, Pike University fosters leadership, management, and personal development skills in its Brothers, in order to prepare them for success. Pike understands that through strengthening each member, they are in turn strengthening the organization as a whole, and in order to make this a reality, they have granted more than $100,000 in Pike University scholarships each year!
It is appropriate that the Pike Badge is a diamond, as all members hold themselves to only the finest standards, welcoming new initiates, and refining them into men worthy of regard. With their history of achievement dating back to 1868, and a legacy of caring for others as they care for themselves, the Brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha are truly Scholars, Leaders, Athletes, and Gentlemen.
