Delta Tau Delta
Over 150 years of rich history began with eight friends in 1858 at Bethany College, in what is now the state of West Virginia. These eight men were members of the Neotrophian Literary Society, an organization that promoted and awarded prizes in poetry, public speaking, and essay writing, however, the society frequently used unscrupulous tactics in awarding these prizes. Dissatisfied with the corruption they found in their organization, these brave young men were not content to sit idly by, so they set out, drawn together by a common goals and brotherly regard, to found Delta Tau Delta (Delt).
Since 1858, the Delts have spread to nearly 225 campuses, with more than 140 active chapters and colonies comprised of roughly 10,000 students. Since its founding, more than 175,000 men have joined the brotherhood of Delta Tau Delta, including luminaries such as William Brennan (U.S. Supreme Court Justice), Tim Boyle (President; Columbia Sportswear), John Elway (Quarterback & Executive VP of Football Operations; Denver Broncos), Peter Buck (Lead Guitarist; R.E.M.), and actors Will Ferrell and Matthew McConaughey. With Brothers like these, it is easy to see why so many men want to wear the Delt purple, white, and gold!
Keeping in mind the four fundamental principles of Truth, Courage, Faith, and Power, the men of Delta Tau Delta are proud to serve their communities through their philanthropic partnership with the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). The JDRF is the worldwide leader for research towards curing, treating, and preventing type 1diabetes (T1D). Over 60 Delt chapters and colonies nationwide work with their local JDRF to help raise funds and awareness about T1D and its complications.
Delta Tau Delta is a values-based organization, one that offers its Brothers challenges and opportunities not faced by others, but Delts, with their bravery symbolized by the shield-shaped Badge they proudly wear, always rise to the occasion and are guided by their principles to do what is right. Regardless of the paths they may take, all Delt men strive to live by their common mission: “Committed to lives of excellence.”
